This step will allow Cryobank America to determine your specimen's eligibility for cryopreservation. During this visit, we can also save your semen for future use. Once our lab confirms your sample is viable, we will process it for cryopreservation. View our Semen Analysis page for more information regarding this step.

Sperm Collection

Each collection includes professional processing, sperm banking, and cryopreservation of the sample as part of a comprehensive fertility preservation protocol. To optimize sperm quality and maximize the number of progressively motile sperm cells prior to cryopreservation, we recommend a 48-hour abstinence period before each collection.

Utilizing Your Specimen

If you plan to use your cryopreserved sperm with a recipient who is a sexual partner, additional blood testing or a repeat medical examination is not required.

However, if your stored sperm specimens are intended for use with a recipient who is not a sexually intimate partner, fertility preservation guidelines require an additional medical examination and blood testing after completion of the six-month quarantine period associated with our Directed (Identified) Donor Collection services.

Please note that some treating physicians and fertility clinics will not utilize sperm samples that have not completed the post-quarantine infectious disease testing process. For this reason, completing all recommended screening steps is an important part of compliant, clinic-ready sperm banking and long-term fertility preservation.

Fertility Preservation for Transgender Individuals Before GAHT or Gender-Affirming Surgery

Fertility preservation is an important consideration for transgender individuals who plan to begin gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) or undergo gender-affirming surgery (GAS). These treatments can significantly impact reproductive potential and, in some cases, permanently compromise fertility.

Before starting GAHT or pursuing surgical interventions, sperm banking and sperm freezing provide a reliable option to preserve the ability to have biological children in the future. Cryopreservation allows sperm to be safely stored prior to treatment, ensuring reproductive choices remain available regardless of how the medical transition progresses.

Cryobank America offers confidential, respectful fertility preservation services for transgender individuals, with professional guidance throughout the sperm freezing and storage process. Our approach prioritizes privacy, informed decision-making, and long-term reproductive autonomy.

Preserving fertility before GAHT or GAS allows transgender individuals to focus on their transition while maintaining future family-building options on their own terms and timeline.

Fertility Preservation FAQ

What is sperm banking?

Sperm banking, also known as sperm cryopreservation or semen freezing, is the process of collecting, analyzing, freezing, and securely storing sperm for future use. Cryopreserved sperm may later be used in fertility treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Who should consider freezing and storing sperm?

Personal sperm banking may be beneficial for anyone who wants to preserve future reproductive options. Common reasons include:

  • Chemotherapy, radiation, or other medical treatments that may affect fertility
  • Gender-affirming hormone therapy or surgery
  • An upcoming vasectomy
  • Military deployment or a high-risk occupation
  • Declining sperm quality or another fertility concern
  • Delaying parenthood for personal or professional reasons
  • Difficulty producing a sample on the day of fertility treatment

Whenever possible, sperm should be collected before beginning treatment or undergoing a procedure that could affect fertility.

How does the sperm banking process work?

The process typically begins with a consultation and the completion of required paperwork. A semen sample is collected in a private collection room, analyzed by the laboratory, divided into storage vials, and frozen using specialized cryopreservation methods. The vials are then securely stored at an extremely low temperature until they are needed.

Because sperm quality and the number of usable vials can vary between samples, multiple collections may be recommended based on your semen analysis results and future family-building goals.

How long can sperm remain frozen?

Properly cryopreserved sperm can be stored for decades. Research has found no substantial storage-related impairment in sperm motility among samples stored for up to 30 years, and live births have been documented using sperm stored for as long as 40 years. Individual outcomes cannot be guaranteed, but storage duration itself is not generally considered the primary factor affecting whether a sample can be used successfully.

How can frozen sperm be used in the future?

When you are ready to use your stored sperm, Cryobank America can coordinate its release and shipment to an authorized fertility clinic or healthcare provider. The appropriate treatment—such as IUI, IVF, or ICSI—will depend on the number of vials stored, post-thaw sperm quality, the reproductive health of the intended parent, and recommendations from the treating physician.

Can I transfer sperm stored at another sperm bank to Cryobank America?

Yes. If your sperm is currently stored at another sperm bank, fertility clinic, or cryogenic storage facility, Cryobank America may be able to facilitate its transfer for an additional fee. Our Client Services team can help coordinate the required documentation, shipping arrangements, and transfer process with the current storage facility. Acceptance is subject to a review of the specimen records, storage history, and applicable requirements.

Do you offer services beyond Arlington, TX?

While sperm banking and cryopreservation are performed at our Arlington and Orange County facilities, Cryobank America also supports clients nationwide through donor sperm services and coordinated distribution to fertility clinics.
