What Is a Single Mother by Choice?

A Single Mother by Choice (SMBC) is a woman who intentionally decides to pursue parenthood independently. For many women, this decision comes after thoughtful consideration of their personal goals, support system, finances, and desire to become a parent.

Women choose this path for many reasons. Some have not met the right partner but feel ready to start a family. Others value the independence and flexibility of creating a family on their own timeline. Whatever the reason, becoming a single mother by choice is a deeply personal decision rooted in intention and planning.

Your Family-Building Options

Every fertility journey is unique, which is why Cryobank America offers donor sperm solutions that support a variety of treatment paths.

At-Home Insemination

Many healthy individuals without known complex fertility issues choose at-home insemination using donor sperm. This option offers privacy, flexibility, and the convenience of inseminating in the comfort of your own home.
Cryobank America offers donor sperm shipping and at-home insemination kits, allowing clients to coordinate insemination around their fertile window.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is one of the most common fertility treatments for single mothers by choice. During an IUI procedure, prepared donor sperm is placed directly into the uterus around ovulation to increase the chances of fertilization.
For many women, IUI serves as the first step in their fertility journey due to its relatively simple and less invasive nature.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Some women may benefit from IVF due to age, diminished ovarian reserve, endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, or other fertility concerns. IVF allows fertilization to occur within a laboratory before embryos are transferred to the uterus. Our team can help you understand the differences between IUI and IVF and coordinate donor sperm shipments directly to your fertility clinic.

Choosing the Right Sperm Donor

Selecting a sperm donor is often one of the most meaningful parts of the process. Every intended parent prioritizes different qualities, and there is no single right way to choose a donor.
Many clients consider factors such as:
  • physical characteristics
  • ethnicity and ancestry
  • CMV status
  • educational background
  • hobbies and interests
  • personality traits
  • family medical history
  • genetic screening results
Cryobank America offers detailed donor profiles that help intended parents make informed decisions while feeling confident in their donor selection.

Secure Your Donor for Future Family Planning

Many single mothers by choice think beyond their first pregnancy and consider whether they may want additional children in the future.

Because donor availability can change over time, many intended parents choose to purchase and store additional donor sperm vials when they find a donor they love. Cryobank America's Vial Vault savings allows clients to securely store donor sperm within our laboratory until they are ready to use it.

This can help preserve the opportunity for future biological siblings while protecting against changes in donor inventory or sellouts. Our Vial Vault offers valuable storage savings for clients who purchase multiple vials.

Building Your Support Network

Parenthood was never meant to be navigated alone. Many single mothers by choice find comfort in connecting with other women who have shared similar experiences.

Strong support systems may include family members, close friends, therapists, fertility counselors, parenting groups, and dedicated SMBC communities. Building your support network before pregnancy can help create a strong foundation for both fertility treatment and future parenthood.

Single Mothers By Choice FAQ

Can I use donor sperm to become a single mother by choice?

Yes. Many individuals use donor sperm to pursue parenthood independently through IUI, ICI, IVF, or ICSI. Your fertility provider can help determine which treatment option is most appropriate for you.

Can I use Cryobank America if I already have a known donor?

Yes. Cryobank America offers Directed Donor Collection services for individuals who have chosen a friend, acquaintance, or other known donor. Our team can coordinate required screening, testing, collection, processing, quarantine, and storage at our Texas location and California location. Contact Client Services to discuss the requirements for your specific treatment plan.

How are Cryobank America sperm donors screened?

Our donors undergo an extensive qualification process that includes medical and family-history reviews, infectious-disease testing, genetic carrier screening, psychological evaluation, semen analysis, physical examination, and background screening. Fewer than 1% of applicants are accepted into our donor program.

How many donor sperm vials will I need?

The number of vials you need depends on your treatment type, fertility history, age, and family-building goals. Your fertility provider can recommend how many vials to purchase for treatment. You may also want to reserve additional vials if you hope to have genetically related siblings in the future. For more information, contact us or read our article How Many Vials Do I Need.

Can a single woman use donor sperm for at-home insemination?

Yes. Cryobank America offers Premium IUI and ICI donor sperm vials for at-home insemination, which may be an option for women without known fertility issues. We recommend discussing at-home insemination with a healthcare provider to determine whether it is appropriate for you. Required forms and shipping restrictions may apply based on your location.

Can I connect with other families who used the same donor?

After submitting your Birth Report, you will receive an invitation to join Cryobank America Circles, our donor sibling registry for families who conceived using the same Cryobank America donor. Participation is voluntary and provides an opportunity to connect with related families.
